Fishing has become an activity you have found peaceful and relaxing for many years. Lately, you've been wanting to take your game to the next level and attempt to engage in kayak fishing. You've been doing some research but found yourself bogged down in many choices.

You've made a list of the features you would like to find in a craft, but are pretty sure you aren't going to be able to find them all. However, you don't have the time to continue looking. You are ready to take the plunge and purchase a fishing kayak.

The Pro Angler line of kayaks from Hobie will almost assuredly check off every wish you have on your list. If you want high-quality materials and standard features, check out more about the Pro Angler below.

Who Is Hobie?

Hobie

Hobie is a company that has been around for over 50 years. It has been the company's mission to produce quality watercraft to enhance the level of play, sport and overall fun of water activities. They create and manufacture sailboats (their most popular product), stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. Hobie has been on the cusp of innovation in the design and creation of watercraft since Hobie Alter founded the company. The Hobie Pro Angler line is just one of the products to come out of an innovative company who is always expanding their offerings to water-loving enthusiasts.

What Type of Product Is the Hobie Pro Angler?

The Hobie Pro Angler is a kayak built for fishing. It can be used by those who like to fish every month as a relaxing hobby or for the competitor who makes a living trolling for fish. The design and features of the Pro Angler make it the perfect portable ally in your fishing adventures.

What Are the Main Features and Components?

  • Hobie H-Rail System: Made from a corrosive-resistant aluminum, Hobie's H-Rail system expands the area allowed on top of the Pro Angler to add more mountable storage space. The extra space allows for additional gear to be easily placed where you need it to be most accessible.
  • Rod Racks: The Pro Angler does not have an identity crisis. It knows its primary purpose is to help you troll the waters of your favorite fishing spot and grab some of that fresh catch. There are spaces and racks to hold six fishing rods horizontally. With the H-Rail system, you can easily add more rod holders if needed.
  • Storage Compartments: At the front of the kayak is a large front hatch that has a removable liner inside. For those of you looking to keep your fresh catch on ice, this is the perfect spot. Throw 20 pounds of ice inside and as many fish as you can. The compartment makes it easy to store what you need and is easily accessible at all times. The removable liner makes clean up a snap.
  • Tackle Management System: You want to be able to get to your tackle box as quickly as possible in the event you need to change lures in a hurry. Right at the foot of the chair is a hatch that contains a high capacity tackle management system. The twist and seal feature of the hatch will ensure that no water gets in.
  • MirageDrive 180: If you have ever been out on your kayak and wished you didn't have to always put the pole down to paddle yourself back into position, Hobie has granted that wish with the installation of its patented MirageDrive 180. No, it's not an onboard motor (although they have those for the Pro Angler too). The MirageDrive allows you to pedal your way around the water, either frontward or backward. No more awkward paddling in tight spots. You can now put your legs to work and allow your hands to stay free for fishing.

Some of the other features that make the Pro Angler unique are:

  • 14-foot platform
  • Non-skid decking for standing
  • Cup holder
  • Tackle box
  • Elevated vantage chair
  • Sail mount

How Easy Is the Pro Angler To Transport and Set Up?

The Pro Angler may be difficult for a single person to mount and dismount from a roof rack or the back of a pickup truck. Hobie provides you some relief with a foldable and portable beach cart that can help you get it to the water from your vehicle and then get it back with relative ease.

Once you have your Pro Angler ready to launch, you will be able to arrange your gear in an orderly fashion that suits your needs. With the storage space right at your fingertips, and the H-Rail system that allows for the mounting of numerous tools and materials, setting your Pro Angler up for a day of looking for a fresh catch is simple and entirely up to you.

How Does the Pro Angler Handle on the Water?

You will never have an easier time navigating a kayak in pursuit of a catch than you will in the Pro Angler. One contributory factor is the MirageDrive 180 pedal system which allows you to pedal your way effortlessly through the water (when the depth of the water enables its use). The MirageDrive is also quiet and won't disrupt fish in the area, so using it adds a bit of extra value. If you need to use a paddle for better steering or in shallower waters, the gliding of the Pro Angler will still be smooth and easy to maneuver.

How Long Will the Pro Angler Last?

As with anything these days, you want to know that an investment such as this is going to give you years of returns. The Pro Angler does just that. Its quality construction was made for durability and longevity. Ultimately, however, it is up to your care and maintenance to keep it functioning well into the future. By following Hobie's recommended maintenance and cleaning schedule, you should be able to keep putting the Pro Angler in the water for many years to come.

There are a few models of the Pro Angler that are available for purchase. The price, therefore, varies. The standard price of this model is $3,549 and includes all of the components and features mentioned above. Any additional or optional equipment, such as a trolling motor or sail, will add to the cost of the product. Pros and Cons of the Hobie Pro Angler

In general, the Hobie Pro Angler offers features that are stronger all around than the competitors. When looking at the pros and cons, we considered how the Pro Angler was better than most of its counterparts. One area Hobie disappointed was the standard two-year warranty. While this warranty isn't bad, it doesn't compare to that of the Old Town Predator MK Kayak. Old Town offers a lifetime warranty on the hull and deck which puts it a step higher than Hobie.

What follows is a breakdown of the good and the bad when it comes to the Hobie Pro Angler versus its competition.

PROS

  • The 14-foot deck allows for easy movement unlike some of the more narrow and less-durable options
  • No-slip grip helps keep you steady
  • Extra rod space is standard which is an improvement over some of the other products offered by competitors
  • Large tackle compartments and ample storage are better than most
  • H-Rail system for mounting additional gear
  • MirageDrive 180 for quiet and simple pedaling versus paddling alone
  • Elevated Vantage chair for comfort and a leg-up on the competition

CONS

  • High cost compared to similar products
  • May be difficult to transport due to weight versus other options

Conclusion

The Hobie Pro Angler is a serious kayak whether you're a dedicated fisherman or not. It offers standard features that are additional accessories on almost any other fishing kayak we found. The MirageDrive 180 makes trolling in your favorite fishing spot easy, especially coupled with the ultra-comfortable Vantage chair. The ample storage space built-in and expanded by the H-Rail system keeps all your gear accessible. The price point, however, is very high, even with all the features. Therefore, while we recommend the Pro Angler above the other fishing kayaks we reviewed, we also understand that the price is high in comparison to most.

You may regret the high price of the Hobie Pro Angler in the short term, but in the long run, it may pay off in fresh catches for years to come.

Final rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars
